Higher Professional School of Social Work in Prague 10
(College of Social Work)
Introduction
Higher Vocational School of Social Work is a state school, based in Prague 10 in the Czech Republic, which has got a long time experience in providing education and training of social workers. The study is designed for the students who have finished their secondary studies. At present we offer two types of study programmes, a three-year daily study and a four-year distant study.
Theoretical curriculum and training
The first year of the study is focused more on building a solid theoretical background for the student’s skills but at the same time the school organizes regular fields trips into various social institutions and NGO´s. Our school has a wide range of partner organizations which provide social services, e.g. senior houses, children’s houses, asylum houses for children at risk, for minor mothers and their babies, a diagnostic institute for young offenders, half-way houses for young people leaving care or institutions. In these organizations, our students take their training part of the study, which usually takes up two days a week, apart from the continuous training in June.
The second and the third year of the study include these subjects: Social pathology, psychiatry, social welfare, law, culture of communication, economics, statistics and demography. Apart from these compulsory subjects there is a wide choice of additional ones, such as psychotherapy, early intervention, psychosocial training and methods of social work with specific groups of clients: dysfunctional families, drug abusers, seniors, unemployed, people on the margin, ethnic minorities.
Out of school activities
Our students are widely welcomed to take part in various campaigns trying to attract the public attention to the current hot issues as well as working as volunteers outside of the compulsory curriculum. Currently, we are running a mutual cooperation with a civic association Rosa, which focuses their attention to domestic violence. Our students have been involved in their fundraising activities.
Final exams
To finish the studies, the students take final exams in one of the two foreign languages which are taught at present, i.e. German and English, and methods of social work, social politics, family law, social services legislation and social welfare. An integral part the final exams is a presentation of the final work (a thesis) which proves the student’s ability to orientate themselves in a specific area of social work and support their arguments by practical experience and various ways of research. A successful graduate is granted a title Diploma Specialist.
Graduates and their future employment opportunities
Our graduates can realize their potential in many areas of social work and state administration and we may proudly add that they compete very well with the graduates having university degrees in social work.
International cooperation
Our school has established a partnership with a Dutch school of social work. The result of our cooperation has been a new curriculum, which reflects the new tendencies in social work and the new social problems, which appeared in the Czech society after 1989. We constantly realize how important is to be in touch with the latest development in social work and share our experience, that is why we organize an annual meeting with the colleagues and students from the Dutch school who come to visit various social institutions in the Czech Republic.
